Older BART labor disputes are useful context, but they should not be treated as evidence of today’s pay, benefits or work rules. Archived letters, union materials and Board records can show what the parties were debating at a particular moment in time.
Use dates aggressively
Labor terms can change through new contracts, extensions, side letters and Board action. When reading an older document, first identify the date, bargaining unit and whether it describes a proposal, a tentative agreement or a final ratified agreement.
