Collective bargaining at BART sets important parts of compensation, scheduling, benefits and workplace rules for represented employees. Different employee groups are covered by different bargaining units, which means there is no single contract that applies to every BART worker.
Start with the bargaining unit
BART publishes collective bargaining agreements for major represented groups, including AFSCME, ATU, SEIU, BPOA and BPMA. The agreement that matters to an employee depends on the classification and bargaining unit tied to the job.
Tentative agreement vs. final agreement
A tentative agreement is a negotiated package that still may require union-member ratification and BART Board approval. Contract language becomes the best source only after the required approvals are complete and the agreement is formally in effect.
Where to check a disputed detail
- Read the current agreement for your bargaining unit.
- Check Board resolutions approving extensions or amendments.
- Use official pay schedules for current salary ranges.
- For an individual grievance or contract interpretation, follow the procedure in the applicable agreement or contact the relevant representative.
